Product design managers generally work full time in an office setting, with occasional trips to industrial work sites to directly oversee construction. Product design managers work with - and oversee - a group of designers, but they may also coordinate with managers from other departments such as production and marketing. Additionally, they may need to communicate directly with contractors and suppliers of equipment and materials. Product design managers are hired by many different kinds of firms, although the majority of product design managers work in manufacturing and architectural engineering.
Product design managers are generally required to have five or more years of design experience, with at least two years of experience in a supervisory role related to product design.
