Job Description for Senior Medical Transcriptionist
Senior medical transcriptionists transcribe and interpret dictations made by health care professionals (such as physicians) regarding patient assessment, diagnosis and prognosis, and therapeutic procedures, among other areas. These transcriptions require a high level of skill or accuracy. Reports are transcribed in an electronic format to create files that represent the full medical history of a patient. The senior medical transcriptionist holds additional managerial duties. They may supervise the work of a small- to medium-sized group of lower-level transcriptionists, reviewing their work and ensuring an efficient workflow of transcribed medical reports. They may also administer tests and training to prospective employees. Senior medical transcriptionists may also provide administrative assistance to personnel in different departments or a supervisor in their own department.
Although the work is largely mental, there is a substantial amount of typing required. Senior medical transcriptionists generally work full time in an office setting during regular business hours, although weekend and evening work may be required depending on their employer's needs. During the workday, these professionals communicate with a supervisor or director, the healthcare coordinator whose notes they will transcribe, their team of subordinates, and others they may speak to on the phone (for example, when purchasing new equipment or answering queries).
A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required for this role, usually supplemented with courses in typing and medical terminology. Previous experience is needed as well. Required skills include a good knowledge of medical terminology, familiarity with modern transcribing equipment, accuracy and speed in typing, and good leadership skills with the ability to train and evaluate personnel.
