One key task for the warehouse material handler is helping move merchandise off shipping trucks and into the warehouse. First, the materials handler interacts with the truck driver and the warehouse system to confirm what merchandise should be offloaded; during this process, the material handler also notes any deviations from the intended shipment and makes a record in the warehouse's tracking program. After handling paperwork for merchandise receipt, the material handler starts offloading the truck, a process that may be accomplished with electronic dollies or a forklift. After the merchandise has been offloaded, the material handler builds, secures, and labels pallets. The material handler then uses a forklift to lift the pallet, drive it to a storage location, and make a record in the warehouse system for the location of the pallet so that it can be easily retrieved.
Warehouse material handler positions may require a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in a warehouse environment may be preferred. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
