A welding inspector oversees other welders to make sure that they are carrying out welding techniques properly and are adhering to time constraints and safety standards. The welding inspector also needs to periodically inspect equipment to make sure that it is in working order. When there are methods and procedures that can be improved in the welding guidelines, the welding inspector must update the standards. The welding inspector may be in charge of providing training for a group of welders and getting them certified. To keep up to date with the latest developments, the welding inspector may often be required to travel to seminars and courses. During the workday, the welding inspector will often directly partake in welding activities such as coating, welding, and piping. This job often requires working in a noisy environment, so a welding inspector should not be sensitive to loud sounds. Exposure to toxic chemicals may also be encountered. Basic computer skills are usually required in order to create reports regarding welding activity. Minimum physical standards are also needed, such as the ability to bend, stoop, squat, and lift heavy objects. The job generally requires AWS QC-1 certification, as well as a few years of experience.
