A civil engineering designer works under the direction of a project manager to prepare civil engineering plans and studies for land development engineering projects. Potential projects might include utility, storm drain, water, sewer, street, and traffic plans for projects within the organization's area of service. Civil engineering designers must work effectively with internal and external partners, including coordinating with public agencies on land development projects. They work closely with colleagues to gain an understanding of the project requirements and create designs in conjunction with office procedures, policies, and guidelines. Often, civil engineering designers must provide guidance to less experienced colleagues about the technical procedures used to create designs. Employers generally require civil engineering designers to have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited program. Prospective employees also generally need at least two to four years' experience in civil engineering, as well as proficiency with AutoCAD (including Civil 3D experience).
