A fast food cook holds an entry-level position in casual, quick-serve restaurants. Most of these establishments are part of national chains, and thus put an emphasis on consistency of output on their cooks. A fast food cook normally learn one station (including its required food preparation) and then moves to others. New fast food cooks are traditionally paired at first with more experienced cooks who gradually add more and more duties to the new cook's responsibilities. A cook at this level frequently finds that many of the processes are automated and that a variety of timers and temperature gauges take much of the judgment and guesswork out of the food-preparation process, helping the cook ensure consistent product output.

Besides consistency, a fast food restaurant looks for efficiency and speed in their cooks. The presence of automated equipment and product planning is typically made in corporate test kitchens to allow even inexperienced cooks who may be working their first paid job to rapidly gain confidence and work faster as time goes on.

The education and experience requirements for fast food cook positions are generally minimal or non-existent. Typically, a worker must be able to present documents proving a right to work and pass a drug screening.
