Many of the drilling tasks include mud and air rotary, diamond coring, and auger drilling. They are required to use appropriate methods to complete these tasks. They must know how to use equipment, such as video vans, sonar jets, testing equipment, and cranes. Core drillers typically work in an outside environment. Some employers ask employees to travel for this kind of job, but most do not require any traveling other than to and from the job sites. Strength is a must, as heavy lifting is usually required, including lifting up to 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
They must either have a high school diploma or a GED. They are required to have a drivers license that is valid, as they must be able to drive all company vehicles. A pre-employment drug screening is also required for all workers, and they have to be authorized to work in the USA. Most core drillers have driller helpers and pump operators that work with them. Many of the companies that hire these types of workers deal with gas and oil. Core drillers are the ones loading and exploding charges to get oil flowing, weighing the clay to mix with water for drilling mud, and making sure all equipment is functioning at the correct speeds.
