Design engineering managers are employed in a number of fields, including architecture, manufacturing, and research/development, to lead a team of engineers and ensure that projects are completed on-budget and in a timely manner. Specific duties of these managers include assessing the feasibility of potential design projects, determining what resources are required to complete them, recruiting and managing employees, and serving as a liaison between team members and upper management. The skills required to support these duties include organization, critical and analytical thinking, leadership, and communication, and other technical skills may also be required, but can vary depending on the employer.
Design engineering managers spend most of their time in an office environment, but may also spend time out in the field visiting job sites. They typically work during regular weekly business hours, though this can vary, and overtime may be necessary when projects are near completion. Some travel may be required, both to and from job sites and to attend training sessions or meetings.
This position generally requires at least a bachelor's degree, and some employers prefer applicants who have a master's degree. It is a highly-skilled position which requires significant experience, and most employers prefer at least eight years of engineering and management experience in applicants.
