The consultant's primary role involves analyzing the many ways a company uses power to determine how it can adjust current levels of consumption, perhaps by suggesting alternative power sources such as wind, solar, etc., which not only reduce costs, but contribute to savings, as well. Energy consultants may work either independently or on teams within their company; they will not only run audits, but also delve into analytic data and determine which practical implementations should be made.
Candidates for this position should have a college degree in environmental engineering or another earth science-related field. Many employers may prefer those who have prior work experience in the energy sector.
An energy consultant’s day is far from typical; generally, there is a significant amount of traveling, especially if visiting multiple sites is necessary. There may even be international trips if he/she works for a multi-national company. Energy consultants should occasionally expect to work on weekends or other odd hours depending on what must be accomplished. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
