Most fast food workers work indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Some restaurants may require fast food workers to go outside and take orders from cars if the drive-thru is particularly busy. Additionally, some fast food establishments have an outdoor dining area where fast food workers take orders from customers and maintain general cleanliness of the area. When handling food, fast food workers must adhere to all safety and sanitary regulations and guidelines; they also need to provide high-quality customer service at all times and ensure dining areas are clean.
A high school diploma or equivalent may be required for fast food worker positions; however, individuals may obtain the job with no education. Previous experience in fast food or customer service may be required or preferred as well. Training for fast food positions is generally provided on the job, with an experienced team member providing training and the worker learning about safety and health standards through video, computer or in-person training by a supervisor or manager.
