A bachelor’s degree or higher in a foreign language may be required for this position, and some institutions require applicants to possess current teaching certification. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential in this position, and lessons must be prepared and properly organized prior to teaching classes. Applicants must be knowledgeable of current teaching methodologies and should also be patient, compassionate, and professional, and flexibility is important to work different schedules. They may have office hours for students to consult about their progress, and some also monitor and supervise teachers' assistants. Feedback must also be provided to students in a timely manner.
Postsecondary foreign language/literature teachers may be required to attend conferences or ongoing education classes, and some also coach and mentor new teachers and/or interns.
