Forklift mechanics must be able to use jacks, usually of the hydraulic nature, to lift heavy forklifts from the ground to get closer looks for inspection. Travel may be a regular part of the job, as these mechanics generally drive to the location in need of service. Work may occasionally take place outside, even in inclement weather, and close attention to detail is also important in this position to avoid accidents of any kind.
It is common for forklift mechanics to have an associate’s degree as well as certification. Some facilities require certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which expands employment opportunities for these mechanics.
