Job Description for Prison Officer

Prison officers work inside a jail or prison to ensure inmates are safe and orderly. The position often involves providing teaching programs to offenders, using security equipment such as cameras, and performing body and cell searches to make sure that prisoners do not have any contraband. A prison officer must be constantly aware of their environment to detect anomalous behavior and potential threat. When prisoners' behavioral episodes cannot be prevented, prison officers must have the ability to restrain and control prisoners while remaining calm. It is important that prison officers are able to work well under pressure, make sure inmates follow all applicable rules, and when they do not, provide correctional discipline. Prison offers must follow all of their institution's guidelines and make sure that prisoners’ basic needs are met.
