Job Description for Purchase Ledger Clerk

Purchase ledger clerks are responsible for managing all financial transactions paid out by a company. This title is typically the British equivalent of the accounts payable clerk position in the United States. These professionals gather, create, and verify invoices to develop an accurate picture of a company’s expenditures. This verification includes checking invoices against receipts to ensure delivery of all purchased items and to verify proper payment was requested. If there are discrepancies, they may be required to contact suppliers or other departments that handle supplier relations. When they are assured that everything on the invoice is in order, they pay suppliers according to their agreed terms. If there is a dispute about this payment, they work with the supplier to resolve it. Once an invoice has been verified and payment successfully issued, purchase ledger clerks log this information in the purchase ledger to provide data for other financial departments.
