Cartoonists must be experienced in both drawing and software such as Adobe Photoshop and Mac Illustrator, and work primarily in an office environment; travel may only be necessary on rare occasions. They are generally responsible for creating and illustrating works of art, which may serve multiple purposes depending on the company. They may draw short-paneled comics to amuse and entertain readers, or design artwork for the back of a product's packaging. They generally work closely with the creative director and writers for content and prompts to follow, as well as editors who will help bring designs to company standards, so strong communication skills are important in this position. Depending on the industry, cartoonists may draw a wide range of content, so it is advisable to understand exactly what each company wants when working on a freelance basis.
