Job Description for Certified Medication Aide
A certified medication aide (CMA) is responsible for administering medication to patients in a medical setting. They work closely with health professionals and patients to administer and document medication intake, writing reports and documenting customer interactions. Often, CMAs must also assist patients in using the restroom and performing other personal hygiene tasks. They typical job setting for a certified medication aide is indoors, generally in a hospital or assisted living center. Working hours vary and aren't necessarily typical daytime hours; patients need care around the clock, so there are generally three shifts available: a day shift, a night shift, and an overnight shift. In most instances, CMAs are supervised by a lead nurse or charge nurse.
In addition to a high school diploma, most employers require a medication aide certificate or a certified nursing assistant certificate. Some states also have state certificates which must be obtained by prospective CMAs. Skills with basic computer software (such as word processing programs) and database management are generally required. A certified medical aide must possess a strong desire to help others and have excellent communication skills. Customer service skills and excellent attention to detail are important job requirements.
