Chief radiation therapists must be thoroughly knowledgeable of radiation therapy theory, applications and safety protocols, and must ensure that these protocols are met by all radiation therapists working underneath them. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills are important in this position, and they must also show independence in setting and meeting deadlines and delegating duties. They are also required to oversee the daily activities of their therapists and follow up with them on assignments and/or problem-resolutions.
Chief radiation therapists must conduct performance reviews on a regular basis per their companies' procedures and provide feedback to their employees on a timely basis. They must be able to work in team environments; when working directly with patients, they must be compassionate, maintain a positive attitude, and provide emotional support. They must also be comfortable with giving presentations, and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Power Point, Word, Excel, Outlook) is beneficial. Those in this position must always stay up-to-date with new technology and imaging devices, and they occasionally need to attend training classes, workshops, or conferences.
