Job Description for Child Care Center Director
Child care center directors oversee the administrative and day-to-day operations of day care centers, preschools, and other short-term child care facilities. Their duties include ensuring a safe and education environment for children, evaluating the finances of their facility, and advising teachers and other subordinates in curriculum and activities. They also monitor services to ensure that all licensing standards are met, represent the child care center in the accreditation process, brainstorm and implement marketing campaigns, and serve as tour guide of the facility. Most child care centers have operating hours that begin around 6 a.m. and end between 6 and 7 p.m. Most children enrolled in these programs are under 10; however, special circumstances (such as a child care facility at a hospital) may include working with older children as well. Some programs operate only to supervise children during daytime hours (for example, while parents or guardians are at work), but some facilities also provide educational programs.
Each state establishes licensing requirements that must be met by all applicants for director positions. Education generally must include either a bachelor's degree in a child care-related field with one year of relevant job experience; an associate's degree in a child care-related field with coursework in early childhood education and one year of relevant job experience; or a Childcare Development Associate (CDA) certification with two years of relevant job experience and one year supervisory experience.
