Job Description for Clinical Geneticist
Clinical geneticists, whose work blends science and medicine with working with patients, are responsible for analyzing genomic data in a variety of ways pertaining to medicine and biotechnology. They generally work in office settings and diagnose medical conditions related to genetic errors, as well as develop plans for how to treat these patients. Some may also work alongside pharmaceutical companies to create drugs which treat these genetic problems. The work can often be divided into two halves, the first being the lab where they analyze genomic sequences of patients, and the second being a clinical setting in which they work with patients and their families.Read More...
A medical degree from an ACGME-accredited MD or DO university and board qualification or certification in medical genetics are generally required for this position, and prior work experience in genetics is highly beneficial. Applicants should also pay close attention to detail and have good bedside manner when working with patients.
Clinical geneticists generally work during traditional business hours unless clinic hours are also necessary on nights or weekends, and travel is not necessary for this position. Some may occasionally be required to teach if hired at a teaching hospital. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
