Colorists work primarily at beauty parlors and hair salons to color customers’ hair and sell hair care products. Many employers require colorists to be familiar with a variety of hair coloring products, and other duties include keeping the work area clean, administrative work, operating cash registers, answering phone calls, and greeting customers. Because they work directly with customers, strong interpersonal and communication skills are important in this position, and they must be able to stand for long periods of time. Some states require beauticians and skin care specialists to have cosmetology licenses and they must always adhere to local and state licensing laws, rules, and regulations. A high school diploma or GED may be a minimum requirement for this position, and attending a reputable beauty school may also be required. Colorists should keep themselves up-to-date with hair products and coloring techniques by reading relevant journals and attending workshops and training, and some may also be required to train new colorists.
