A computer aided design, or CAD, designer's responsibilities revolve around taking blueprints and designs from engineers, and reformatting and representing them in a digital form. Rough product designs, building schematics, or additional product add-ons or modifications are examples of designs and documents that CAD designers are asked to reproduce on computers. The heavy reliance on mechanical engineering for a CAD designer means that an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is necessary, as is previous experience and knowledge of mechanical engineering technology. Knowledge of current engineering practices are critical for the CAD designer to be able to check the work of others and fix it if necessary.
