A high school diploma and graduation and certification from an accredited school of cosmetology are required for this position. Attention to detail is essential, as cosmetologists are expected to produce outstanding results for every customer on any given day. It is also important to maintain the cleanliness of the work area so it is always welcoming to customers. Working according to company policies and local and federal regulations is always expected, and cosmetologists may also have front-desk duties such as greeting customers, scheduling appointments, and operating the cash register.
This job requires some physical strength, as cosmetologists perform repetitive motions and stand and walk for most of their shifts. They may be paid on a per-job or hourly basis and some employers offer commission, so it's important to be able to up-sell and provide strong customer service so that customers will return for future service.
