What is it like working as a Data Analyst?

November 2018
Vitamin D and a Sun Lamp.
Data Analyst in Seattle:
Pros: Good coffee on every corner. When you get a nice day, it's gorgeous, and you're near about a million good hiking, skiing, biking, and running spots. There's a dive bar for everything and the city is full of good food, though some cuisines are easier to find than other. It's an economically booming town, by and large - which comes with issues, but if nothing else it's not shrinking (no one wants the problems of early-millenium Detroit in their city). If your skillset is pretty marketable, it's not terribly difficult to make some money here, though there are fewer startups here than in the Bay. The development/NIMBY issues aren't quite as bad as the Bay and seem to be getting better - we're actually building apartments and condos and occasionally manage to rezone a neighborhood such that it is no longer restricted entirely to the preexisting residents' nice big lots, fancy view, and exclusionary attitude towards young people, renters, or adorable backyard cottages. Overall, it's a city with plenty of opportunities, amazing outdoors (as long as you can fight your way through the darker and rainier periods), lots of food, and improving infrastructure & zoning laws. And frankly, the weather never gets very extreme by objective standards, so if you're from a place where winters are REALLY bad, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about (even if the lack of postcard-perfect snow occasionally irritates you).
Cons: it's expensive, it's often grey and rainy, and for a place with an overall forward-looking attitude, the local politics will consistently stress you out. In general, people are not "come over to your house to greet the new neighbors with brownies" types. The most reliable ways to "meet people" are usually going to be through shared activities, not coincidence. Good news is there are plenty of climbing, running, biking, gaming, writing, music, and whatever-else clubs, meetups, theme nights and more. Bad news is the people you hang out with to design robotic baskets may not become your best pals outside of robotic basket design club...and that's ok, but be forewarned: if you're from Tennessee, the culture is going to feel very odd to you. With that said, there's a couple hundred thousand people who have somehow managed to have friends and relationships and meaningful social interactions here, so...easy on the "Seattle people are frigid and no one talks to me" complaints. It's probably the S.A.D. and a cultural misunderstanding talking. For a city with lots of precipitation, we don't drive in the rain (or in general) nearly as well as we should. I would blame the Californian transplants, but pretty sure it was like that beforehand, too. Traffic is bad. Good news is public transit is largely reliable, especially along major routes, but squeezing onto a commuter bus isn't usually fun - it's just more fun than sitting in your car for an hour and a half on I5.

Locals vs Newcomers.
Data Analyst in Cape Town:
Pros: The city, in general, is a beautiful place to live, and for middle and upper-class people can provide a fulfilling lifestyle.
Cons: Most locals are a bit jaded about new comers to Cape Town, and it can be difficult to meet new people.

Data Analyst:
The environment is generally pretty positive and it's got good work/life balance, but the pay isn't really commensurate with your duties and experience level. I'm aiming to leave within the next six months or so, largely for better comp.

Data Analyst:
Leadership building, young data infrastructure with basic and somewhat limited analytical appetite, Tableau and Excel, best travel benefits of aviation industry, low compensation, genuine family culture, compassionate management.

It is nice.
Data Analyst in Berlin:
Pros: the most i like is the punctual timing
Cons: also the least is the punctual timing haha

Phenomenal career choice.
Data Analyst in Cleveland:
Pros: Being a data analyst involves data analysis, and that’s what I enjoy the most. My job specifically gives me the freedom to explore new software and strategies to raise the quality of analyses we provide.
Cons: High expectations are the norm. Mentorship opportunities for analysts are nonexistent. Lots of busywork because of technical limitations of coworkers.
