Enrollment advisors usually work in the admission or registrar's office of the university with a team of other enrollment advisors, and a dean or chairperson is typically their supervisor. Advisors will typically have their own office. An enrollment advisor must have superior interpersonal and communication skills, as they must meet with new students on a regular basis either in person, over the phone, or via email.
Most jobs require a bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field. Also, an extensive knowledge of the higher education market and industry is needed. Advisors usually work during standard daytime business hours. They commonly take and uphold appointments with students and must have excellent punctuality and organizational skills. Also, enrollment advisors are required to attend staff meetings. They rarely work overtime. Unlike teachers, they are expected to work year round, as there are candidates engaging in the enrollment process and seeking advising at all times of the year. Since some enrollment advisors need to find and recruit students, an advisor might have to travel to college recruitment events or give presentations to groups such as high school seniors.
