Conditions that the eye surgeon may handle in their practice include glaucoma, cancer and cataracts, among others; they also conduct surgeries related to eye injuries, as well as corneal transplants and plastic or reconstructive surgeries. In addition to performing surgeries, eye surgeons prescribe medications and otherwise treat eye conditions; they must discuss these medications and conditions with patients to ensure they have all necessary information and any questions are answered. Eye surgeons also brief surgical candidates on what the procedure will be like in the pre-surgery, surgery and recovery stages. Additionally, they order tests as needed and interpret their results.
To become an eye surgeon, an individual must graduate from an accredited medical school and subsequently receive four years of training in ophthalmology. A residency is often required as well. In addition to medical knowledge, eye surgeons must have excellent communication and patient care skills to interact successfully with patients. They may also need office-management skills to successfully run their own practice. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
