Interior architects are responsible for designing and overseeing interior construction on behalf of their organization. They are in charge of managing all details related to interior architecture and construction materials, and they must follow client-approved designs. The interior architect's main functions also include collecting and preparing expense proposals, reporting programmatic data, and modifying existing design to fit with client criteria. Interior architects need to develop strong business relationship with material vendors and clients. Additionally, they develop parameters to create constructions documents and project proposals, as well as facilitate schedule estimates. In all tasks, interior architects must follow safety regulations and building codes.
A bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or a similar field is generally necessary for this job. Previous experience as an interior architect is often required or preferred, and industry certifications may be beneficial. Interior architects must have strong interior design knowledge, as well as have the ability to follow specific construction guidelines. Additionally, they should be proficient with computer software such as computer-aided design programs and office applications. They also must have experience with interior systems, furniture, building codes, and developing effective interior mechanical and electrical systems.
