A kitchen helper/aide generally assists a cook in a restaurant or other food service establishment such as a school or an assisted living facility. In a cafeteria setting, a kitchen helper/aide may be expected to set up the dining area and kitchen to keep them tidy. Keeping the kitchen neat (including the counters, cooking area, refrigerators, and walls) is essential to ensure hygiene, and the kitchen helper/aide might also be tasked with serving food. They may also be responsible for washing dishes, taking inventory of supplies, and ordering additional supplies when needed.Read More...
In a restaurant, the kitchen helper/aide often chops up the meat and vegetables for the cook or chef. They also stock foods in the kitchen (organizing them so that they are easy to access), and they may also have shopping duties. The kitchen aide must make sure that food items are not expired and are fit for consumption; taking food items' temperature is also important to ensure they are at a safe and consistent temperature.
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is typically necessary for kitchen helper/aide positions. They also need to be able to work a kitchen environment, which can sometimes include fumes, heat, and noise. Some jobs may require previous experience in a similar position, though there are many entry-level positions available.
