Licensed clinical professional counselors supervise clinical staff at every level of a hospital or clinic. They must research, develop, and implement practices that will lead to improvements in staff performance, as well as ensure that all staff documentation meets standards. These professionals are also in charge of coaching and training program staff and providing technical assistance to supervisors and other personnel. Licensed clinical professional counselors usually work with all members of the medical facility, and they may potentially work with outside mental health professionals. To be a licensed clinical professional counselor, an individual generally must have at least a master’s degree in counseling, family therapy, or a related field. They also must be certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors Inc. and Affiliates; some other master's-level licenses may be accepted as well. Licensed clinical professional counselors must have excellent communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills. They should be able to work effectively in a team setting, as well as on their own with minimal supervision.
