Government program managers normally work in particular sectors of government. As a general rule, they work toward the common goal of improving statistics; for example, they often create portfolios which support the cause in doing a task more efficiently, and may also lobby the public to understand viewpoints and opinions of target audiences.

Government program managers work closely with marketing teams, and individual marketers are typically part of their closest groups of co-workers. In some cases, government program managers may work to update a current rule or regulation within a government sector to better suit the needs of an ever-evolving public community. Depending on the particular program or project at hand, they may need to be prepared to travel great distances to meet with new colleagues and teams.

A bachelor’s degree or higher is required for this position, and government program managers often have significant prior experience in team management, specifically in a government or public works setting. Leadership and motivational skills are highly beneficial for success, as these managers may oversee not only members of their own team, but also those of other government sectors and companies.
