Mental Health Clinician Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Mental Health Clinician in San Jose:
"Heads up."
Hey new mental health clinician, get ready for some long hours, ridiculous documentation, and relatively poor pay for what you worked your butt off for. But you will be helping people and doing the job you love.

Mental Health Clinician in New Bedford:
"Won't be rich; stressful."
Without licensure you're basically forced to work for a non-profit agency, which doesn't pay well, & much lower than national average, & mental health associations guidelines recommend for a masters level salary. I had clients that made more than I do. Entire staff got a raise ONCE in my 5 yrs there! Work load expectations are unrealistic (to meet min # of clients/wk, need to book every hour/or every 45 mins due to frequent client no-shows. Reports, notes, & forms are increasingly expected be done DURING session; where's therapy?) Amount of forms is ridiculous & time consuming; be prepared to work more hours than you were hired (& unpaid) in order to complete it & return phone calls. A V.P. Said, "it's the nature of the business." It's near impossible to find a salaried job; just fee-for-service, so if they no-show, you don't get paid. Avg salary is therefore inaccurate due to this in my opinion. Fall below min clients seen/wk & lose benefits. Clientele are chronic & lack progress.
