Job Description for Personal Caregiver
A personal caregiver works in a home to administer care to patients who are elderly or disabled. The scope of the work depends largely on the patients’ needs; in some cases, the personal caregiver may feed, bathe, and change the patient, or simply make sure he/she receives nutrition and prescribed medication and participates in social/community activities. Those in this position may also act as liaisons between a patient and health care providers, such as doctors, and must effectively communicate any changes in a patient’s condition to these doctors.Read More...
The job may involve transporting a patient to various places, so a valid driver’s license is often required. Personal caregivers may work for a company or directly for their client, and may work around-the-clock to aid them whenever needed. Housekeeping duties such as cleaning, doing laundry, washing dishes, and maintaining a hazard-free environment are also important. There may be minimum physical requirements, as these individuals may have to lift or lend physical support to a patient, and the work may involve extensive walking, bending, and climbing stairs.
Personal caregivers may work on a team with other caregivers in order to alternate shifts, so the ability to work well with others is essential. This position often requires both experience and CPR certification. Many part-time and full-time positions are available. (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
