An aspiring gynecologist must obtain a pre-medical degree from a university, followed by four years of medical school and a four-year residency program. Three additional years of residency and additional licensing exams may be required for those who are specializing in a particular area.
Gynecologists provide medical care for women, particularly related to pregnancy and the reproductive system. They may have a wide range of responsibilities, including: performing tests and annual exams; diagnosing infections and illnesses; providing prenatal care throughout pregnancy; providing postnatal care after childbirth; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of medical and technological advances; maintaining confidential patient records; prescribing and advising patients about contraception; explaining procedures and test results; addressing information regarding patients’ fertility; monitoring patients’ conditions; administering medication; referring patients to specialists when necessary; conducting research; and coordinating the activities of nurses and other medical staff.
