The process of manufacturing is often complex, and it requires substantial management and planning to effectively and efficiently produce goods. The primary technical coordinator of these production processes is often called a manufacturing project engineer. This professional is tasked with managing the production and manufacturing process from conception to completion. The manufacturing project engineer supervises the various teams involved in the manufacturing process happen, examines project proposals, uses the information to plan the entire manufacturing process, and directs that process to completion.

Manufacturing project engineers take on many individual responsibilities and may supervise large numbers of people. Vital to the success of any project is communication, and the manufacturing project engineer must make sure that everyone is on the same page and working toward a shared goal. A strong attention to detail is a must, as is a thorough understanding of the technical, financial, and physical demands of the manufacturing process. They must be able to effectively implement changes (as they become necessary) with a minimum of disruption to the process, and they need to be able to meet strict deadlines.

Virtually all engineering positions, regardless of their nature, require at least a bachelor's degree in engineering as a basic prerequisite. A degree in industrial engineering is a specific path that may be beneficial to prospective applicants for manufacturing project engineers.
