A registered massage therapist provides massage services to both healthy and ill clients in a variety of settings. The registered massage therapist must obtain and review a client’s medical history to ensure massage therapy is an appropriate therapeutic technique for the individual. These therapists assess clients' current muscle conditions and discuss the potential for improvement with massage techniques. Registered massage therapists work in a variety of settings. They may be employed in inpatient or outpatient hospital settings, working closely with physical therapists to obtain optimal functional outcomes for patients. Registered massage therapists may also work in salons, hotels, resorts, private doctor's offices, and outpatient therapy centers. A registered massage therapist may also choose to work independently, providing in-home and on-location services.
Requirements for a registered massage therapist vary by state. In general, a minimum of a certificate in massage therapy is required for practice, along with national certification as a registered massage therapist. An associate’s degree in massage therapy and/or state licensure as a massage therapist may be required in some locations. A strong knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal and muscular systems is essential. Upper body strength and hand strength is required, as a registered massage therapist may be massaging a client for up to an hour. Lifting of up to 50 pounds can occur on a daily basis.
