Biotechnology research technicians may work for scientists and carry out tests and research as directed; however, much of the work is done independently, so it is important to be self-driven and adhere to all guidelines with minimal supervision. Another common type of research assistance involves extracting and growing cultures for research needs. Good communication skills are important this position in order to work well with other team members and write detailed and cohesive reports, and strong computer skills are important in order to analyze data and carry out research tasks.
Some employers will require college education for this position, such as an associate's degree, while others require a bachelor's degree in biology, biotechnology, or a related field. Knowledge of scientific research is essential in this job, though some employers will offer on-the-job training. In addition to carrying out research tasks, it is also important to keep up with lab maintenance, and these technicians are often in charge of ensuring that equipment is well-maintained and working properly.
