A restaurant host works at a restaurant, escorts guests to tables, and often provides them with menus. Sometimes, the host will take reservations in person and over the phone, which must be recorded clearly. This job often requires the ability to multitask. Guests should be seated based on party size and seating preference. The reservations should be a priority, but the host may choose to give a spot to someone who is waiting in line. Sometimes, customers may become angry when wait times are long, so it is important to be able to work well under pressure, to stay patient, and to continue to provide excellent customer service. The host is often the first employee a customer sees when entering the premises, so a friendly demeanor is essential. This job requires the ability to walk and stand for long periods of time. Strong communication skills are necessary, in order to work well with customers and various restaurant personnel. The host may also take the initial drink order, so it is essential to be able to communicate this to the server. The host will work with servers to balance out table loads.
Usually both part-time and full-time positions are available. Weekend hours are often required since many restaurants are busiest on weekends. A minimum of a high school diploma may be needed for this job. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
