Much of the route driver's working hours are spent on the road. In addition to driving responsibilities, most route drivers must also be able to load and unload their vehicles. This may require the ability to do some heavy lifting and move equipment up and down stairs. A route driver must be punctual, dependable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Because route drivers come in contact with a variety of customers and clients, it is important they have good communications skills, be well spoken, and be appropriately dressed. Some basic computer and math skills may also be required. Although there is normally not a formal education requirement, a route driver often is required to complete a certification test for the hiring company. A prospective employee may be required to already have or be able to obtain various driving certifications.
