Job Description for School Psychologist

School psychologists work primarily in schools, as their title suggests, and their work focuses on assessing and interpreting students of the school to ensure they are receiving the best possible education suited to their needs. They also review test results, consult with parents and teachers, and generally observe students and their learning environments, and may be required to diagnose learning disorders, mental disabilities, and behavioral problems and work to resolve them.

To best meet the learning requirements of each student, school psychologists may plan, implement, and evaluate in-school programs, as well as recommend certain approaches to parents and teachers regarding behavioral problems of students. They also work directly with students and provide counseling and advice on how to better cope with classroom scenarios.

School psychologists interact with many people on a day-to-day basis; they usually work under a superintendent, and may supervise clerical/support staff themselves. They generally work during traditional school hours and their work is non-physical, though they should have knowledge of computers and perhaps certain software programs related to data and statistics. A master's degree is required in order to become a nationally-certified school psychologist, and this course of study may include an internship at a school.
