Software Developer Reviews
What is it like working as a Software Developer?
December 2018
Software Developer:
PQ Systems offers a very pleasant work environment with management who prefer working alongside their colleagues rather than delegating work to subordinates. Culture is great although over the 30 years of business there are qualities that have stuck which can seem a little dated. Professional development is strongly suggested and funded for all employees. Benefits are great for company size. There is a small amount of turnover, and much of the turnover is a result of making employees highly employable through experiences gained at PQ to the point they receive a job offer than they can't pass on.

Big promotions go to friends and family, historically. This is changing a little, but if you're part of the boss's "lunch club" you're a shoe-in for a promotion. You probably won't really be pushed or challenged here, it's super easy to coast and just be a little cog in the big machine. Some devs like that, others don't. There is little room for you to make a unique contribution. There are definite processes and they reign supreme. There are good people there. There are smart people there. Team I was on had good chemistry.
Biggest issue with Xactware is that giving extra effort and trying to really deliver makes zero difference in your bonus or annual raise. The way their performance management is structured (a curve where the vast majority of people fall in the "average" range, upper management always take the top tier for themselves) just doesn't reward you at all if you are a great dev doing your thing. Not that I was an all-star dev, but even if I was it doesn't matter. It's all about just not being the worst person on the team who gets to be the guy that fil
