Depending on the field, the specific tasks of the senior geologist can vary widely. For example, in the petroleum industry, the senior geologist analyzes the geological makeup of potential drilling sites and tests the location's stratigraphic properties to ensure suitability for drilling and safety. Senior geologists are also employed to use geophysical and geotechnical techniques to locate and secure mineral deposits, develop mining structures and operations, and establish natural gas drilling sites, among other tasks.
