A toy designer usually works for a manufacturing company that produces toys. Some toy designers may also work on a per-project basis. The designer should create sketches and CAD designs of toys. The designs should be reviewed to make sure that the structures are sound and safe. The costs of production should also be considered, especially relating to how much consumers are willing to pay. It is important to have strong research skills, in order to determine what other companies are selling and come up with better ideas.Read More...
The materials and production process while creating toys may also have to be considered, as many consumers are concerned with green and fair-trade practices. Prior to being sent to the production line, the toy designer should make sure that prototypes have been created and thoroughly tested. It may be necessary for the toy designer to personally work with vendors to purchase high0quality materials at a low price. The technical designer will have to carry out a lot of collaboration with people, such as graphic artists and technical engineers.
Usually, a bachelor’s degree or higher in something such as engineering is required. Strong computer skills are needed, such as the ability to use Adobe Illustrator, CAD, Solid Works, and Microsoft Office. The toy designer may also have to present a portfolio of ideas and past projects to showcase skills, prior to being hired.
