Treatment coordinators often keep track of progress using computer programs, so basic computer skills are necessary. They should be familiar with different insurance plans and what they include in order to determine whether particular treatments are covered. They might also have front-desk duties depending on the size of the practice; this may include verifying insurance eligibility, answering phone calls, and assisting patients with check-in and scheduling.
Generally, a minimum of a high school diploma is needed, though some positions may require a university degree. In some positions involving psychological care, the coordinator must be very familiar with psychological issues and treatment plans in order to develop an effective plan themselves. These positions will generally require a Master’s degree in Psychology, along with licensing, and may require some counseling of the patient before making referrals or treatment suggestions. Above all, good communication skills are essential for treatment coordinators, as they are always working with patients and their families and other parties in the medical field.
