Job Description for Vice President (VP), Operations

Vice presidents (VP) of operations play important executive roles in many different industries. Their primary goal is to increase revenue for a company and improve/oversee operations. They preside over managers of operations and are leaders over entire departments.
Operations VP's are responsible for all activities involved with the operations of a business. This includes development, production, packaging, marketing and sales. They make sure that all of these areas are working efficiently and cost-effectively and they implement personnel or procedural changes when necessary. They must be innovative in planning and making changes that will lead to improved production and revenue.
Their work environment is usually an executive office, and many VP's have secretaries. They usually work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but they do sometimes travel as top representation for their company. Vice presidents of operations generally use statistical and financial software, computers, graphs, charts, telephones, pens and paper, and other typical office supplies. They work in conjunction with chief operating officers and report to the president or chief executive officers.
A master's of business administration or a master's degree in finance is usually required for job applicants. VP's of operations must also have experience in operations or related fields as well as managerial experience. Some make it to the position with a bachelor's degree if they have proven to be very successful in their career.

  • Evaluate operational processes and procedures, and develop strategies and implementation plans to improve and standardize all aspects of operations.
  • Provide leadership for the overall operating performance of the business.
  • Develop, monitor and administer financial program to maintain efficient, quality services.
