Job Description for Gym Manager

Gym managers ensure gyms and fitness clubs run smoothly. Some common duties include preparing financial projections for owners, analyzing foot traffic and overall gym popularity, managing inventory, and ordering supplies and equipment. They also recruit, hire, and manage trainers and other workers, as well as arrange for cleaning and repairs, design ads, and ensure gym members receive excellent customer service. Gym managers are hired by many employers, including universities, sports teams, health facilities, freestanding gyms, hotels, resorts, and businesses with in-house fitness facilities.

Gym managers typical work within the gym that they operate and run. They work with the gym staff, as well as with members to ensure they are having a good time and getting the help they need. Gym managers usually work during regular business hours, although it's normal for them to have to put in overtime in the evenings and weekends. In terms of travel, gym managers are sometimes required to travel if there is a gym opening or to attend a seminar.

In terms of education requirements, some employers require a postsecondary degree in management, business administration, or a related field. However, some employers may accept prior experience in place of formal education. Gym managers should generally be interested in fitness and health, and they must enjoy working in a team setting and be capable of working on their own with minimal supervision. They should have great communication skills and be organized, as well as have knowledge of how to run a successful business.
Gym Manager Tasks
  • Set short and long term goals, plan future improvements and expansion.
  • Maintain a positive relationship between customers and the fitness club through effective communication and outreach.
  • Direct all aspects of the gym, including membership, front desk, facility maintenance, classes, and programs.
  • Manage budget to maximize profits, overseeing the payroll and department expenditures.
  • Meet with gym staff and owner to facilitate communication of objectives, needs, and concerns.
