Assistant Professor, Postsecondary/Higher Education Job Description
The position of assistant professor offers a unique opportunity to shape the education of young individuals as well as perform research to further the interests of the field. An assistant professor's job description can be summarized into two categories: Teaching and Research/Contribution to the University. As an assistant professor the performance in these two areas will determine how successful one becomes in obtaining tenure.
Teaching is a point of emphasis. Assistant professors will be required to teach courses in a specific field. The quality of teaching will be evaluated by the students. Professors should also serve as a mentor to students seeking advice. Holding office hours to provide mentorship as well as tutoring to help students is encouraged.
Aside from teaching, assistant professors are expected to contribute to the field or to the university. This can be done through research or serving on curriculum committees. Research projects should be undertaken in a specific field. Students and graduate students can be recruited to help in this research. Publication is highly encouraged and may be one of the criteria when up for tenure. Assistant professors can contribute to the university in other ways such as serving on curriculum committees. Based on feedback from students and other faculty, the professor on the committee should determine which things should be changed to maximize the student's education in the future terms.
The position of assistant professor is a perfect job for someone who loves to teach and mentor students. They often work in intellectual centers and have mentally stimulating jobs. Professors find fulfillment not only because they enjoy the work they do, but also because they know they have molded individuals that will impact the generations to come.
