Job Description for Director of Engineering

A director of engineering coordinates and manages the entire engineering crew of the company. Although a director of engineering mainly supervises projects, they often conduct hands-on work for projects as well. They typically work with their engineering staff and have minimal interaction with customers and clients, although there are exceptions. A director of engineering typically works in an office setting, although they may travel to project sites. Their day typically includes full-time work during business hours, although the director may have to work longer hours under project deadlines.
The education required for this job typically includes a bachelor's degree in a specific field of engineering; companies mainly hire directors with degrees in an engineering field that pertains to their business. Companies typically do not require special certification for directors of engineering, but they almost always require substantial experience in the field.
