Job Description for Financial Systems Analyst

Financial systems analysts are employed primarily by financial institutions, such as banks and mutual funds companies, but positions are available in wide range of industries. These analysts usually work within accounting, finance, and technology reporting teams, and experience with financial statement forecasting within the company may also be necessary. They must be familiar with both macro- and micro-economic systems to monitor and analyze day-to-day system performance and data integrity metrics, and should also be able to troubleshoot financial problems and develop viable solutions.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook), e-mail, and internal chat platforms is often required for this position. Financial systems analysts must also have good interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Their primary role focuses on analyzing the programmed functionality of their company's computer systems, so they must be familiar with large accounting or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems if they aspire to work for large organizations.

With extensive knowledge of both financial systems and their employer's operations, those in this position are required to design new business processes and review system changes due to ever-changing government laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels; they are responsible for managing, testing, implementing, and documenting these projects from start to finish. A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, computer science, or a related field is generally required for this position, and many employers prefer applicants with significant prior work experience.
Financial Systems Analyst Tasks
  • Troubleshoot problems, resolve system issues, and improve overall data quality and system use.
  • Work with users to minimize disruptions and encourage full use of the system.
  • Document standard processes and common problems.

  • Integrate systems, including transforming data and troubleshooting common tasks.
