An automation engineering technologist works in the manufacturing field to design and create goods. The ability to read blueprints may be required in order to accurately design and build products. After a product is designed, the technologist may be in charge of overseeing production of the product. He/she may also have to carry out maintenance/troubleshooting on automation machines when they are not working correctly. Knowledge of these machines and the ability to carry out electric work are important, as some positions require technologists to be able to repair machines when they are malfunctioning. The use of machines such as drills, mills, grinders, and power tools may be required in order to finish certain products. Some mathematical skills are needed to properly measure components for jobs, and welding skills may also be beneficial.
Some positions require a minimum of a high school diploma, while others require some college education. The position may be carried out in a noisy, factory environment, so employees should not be sensitive to loud sounds. The ability to adhere to a sometimes-strict schedule is important, as there may be minimum production requirements and deadlines set by customers.
