Most of the time, beauty consultants work in the cosmetic department of a department store. They may, however, work for small beauty salons or run their own business. Beauty consultants can work part- time, full-time, or on a commission basis. They must be familiar with the products that they are selling. They may be required to conduct demonstrations of their products on their customers. They must have excellent customer service skills. They must be warm and friendly. They must enjoy meeting and interacting with people. They must be team players. They must demonstrate an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
Some employers may require a high school diploma. Possessing certificates from beauty schools would be a plus. Some employers require that beauty consultants meet established sales goals. They must treat customers in a friendly yet professional manner, in order to maintain a long-lasting relationship. Beauty consultants must follow their companies’ written policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Beauty consultants must continuously keep themselves up to date with new products. They may be required to attend training sessions within the company that are relevant to their jobs and the products that they are selling. They may be required to train and coach new beauty consultants. Beauty consultants must be flexible, since they are often required to work nights, weekends, and overtime. Beauty consultants must be in compliance with all hygiene standards. They must also maintain a clean, safe, and hazard-free work environment.
