Grounds caretakers manage the exterior appearance of a facility and ensure that the grounds are free of obstructions and other hazards. This job involves periodically patrolling the premises; in areas where it snows, snow removal from pathways will also be part of the job. Maintenance of walkways and sidewalks is constant, and these caretakers may also make small repairs to structures on the premises. This job is physically demanding and requires a lot of hands-on work, and the abilities to carry out repetitive motions, carry heavy items, bend and stoop, and stand and walk for long periods of time are essential. They should also be familiar with power and hand tools and equipment, such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, and tractors.
Grounds caretakers must be friendly toward all guests and residents and should provide excellent customer service. Some positions may also require handyman skills, such as in plumbing and electrical. A high school diploma is often a minimum requirement, but not always so.
